I have recently bought myself a retro PC, a Compaq Evo D510 SFF with a Pentium 4 and 2 gigs of RAM. It was working fine until recently, right now it won't turn on, even though the computer is plugged in and two LED-s that are on the motherboard are lit up. I can also hear very quiet buzzing coming from the power supply (175 W) when it is connected to the power outlet. I have disconnected everything except the motherboard and I've taken the CMOS battery out for 10-15 min, but it still does nothing when I press the button. What most likely caused this problem is the fact that I disconnected the power cord from the power outlet many times while it was running, mostly because the power button wouldn't force power off the machine. Instead it would just send a shutdown signal to the operating system. If Windows or any other operating system that I tried running on the computer BSOD-ed or crashed, disconnecting the computer would be the only way to power it off (however I went through the manual yesterday and it seems that holding the power button for 4 seconds or more would force shutdown the computer, either way I will avoid disconnecting the computer from the power outlet, I was quite careless with that). Couple of days ago it also wouldn't power on, but after disconnecting and connecting the power supply the issue would get fixed and the computer would power on. So I was wondering is if I should send the computer to a professional to fix the power supply or should I just replace the power supply. I have found a local seller that sells computer parts (including a power supply) of a same D510 SFF that I have (it is worth noting that the power supply of the D510 SFF is proprietary).
