power supply issue?

Hey Tom's,

I've done some recent upgrades to my pc but can't get my video card to work. It powers up, fan spins, but no display.
If I run off my motherboard everything else works great and functions well.
I have to physically unplug the power cables that connect my video card in order to do this. Wattage calculators put my rig in the 350-400watt range and my power supply is an antec rated at 550w and is less than a year old. Could this be the issue? Any other ideas?

first check if removing the gpu and then using the onboard graphics of the motherboard will boot the system, you can also try the old gpu to try if the system will post bios and access the OS.

it could be a defective GPU that you may need to RMA.

With gpu disconnected and onboard graphics the system boots and runs fine. With gpu powered, no boot. Not even mobo start screen. Gpu is my old one, it worked fine in my other set up minutes before. I upgraded mobo, CPU, windows 8.1, and ram.

Any ideas? Should I do a quick test with shedding load? Disconnect DVD drive and system fans see if it responds at all?

if the new mobo, ram and cpu posted bios without the GPU, then its ok.

you should probably need to test with a different power supply. whats your psu?

also we can't rule out the possibility that the pci-e slot on the mobo is faulty, check with the other pci-e slot.

PSU is a antec 550w.
I never thought about a bad PCI-e slot as a problem , I'll look into that after work today. I might just pick up a PSU and test it as well.

It was the power supply. Disconnected all non essential power but the gpu and it sort of almost tried to fire up. Very weird. Anyways, bought a 725 watt and it works great.
