Power Supply Requirements

Hi all,

currently have the build:

I7 4790 - Cooled by a hyper 212 evo
r9 270x sapphire
2x 8gb hyperx cl10 ddr3 1600mhz
1x 1tb WD caviar blue
1x 120gb Samsung 840 EVO - Boot drive
1x 120gb Kingston v300
corsair cx500m psu

Fans in the zalman z11 plus:
4x corsair AF120 led blue 120mm
2x 80mm fans in doors and 1 140mm front case fan


But I've just ordered a r9 390x asus to replace my r9 270x and just wondering if I need to upgrade my power supply or will the cx500m be enough to power my system?

You need to upgrade! 700watts is what is recommended and I would go with this http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-110b20750vr although a quality 650 would handle it fine.

You should be ok if you're not doing any extreme overclocking. This article should give you a good idea of what to expect regarding total system power requirements:

That's 342W power from the wall, so the system requires less because of PSU inefficiencies.

When dealing with high-end components, I'd recommend high-end power. If I wanted things to run at optimum levels for the longest amount of time, I'd be looking at a Seasonic, XFX (Seasonic built), or Super Flower PSUs.

Thanks for the reply guys, Ubercake I have non k version of 4790 so won't be overclocking that and the graphics card i'll just run at stock speeds as I think that will be enough.

So would you say the current cx500m psu will be fine for now till I can upgrade in a few weeks just don't wana blow anything or cause damage.

It will run it but being a mediocre unit that have had a tendency to fail when run at high loads for days on end it would be a wise decision to upgrade it as soon as you have the funds.

I don't think you'll cause any damage.

How old is the CX500m? I have the CX500 (non-m) version in my HTPC. I don't really stress it and I make it a practice to replace power supplies just before their warranty period is up.

I've had the cx500m about 6 months maybe less

You have a couple more years of warranty on that thing. I'd say roll with it.
