power suppy issues

hi

i'm trying to put in a new power supply in to my hp pavilion desktop but when i turn the computer on there some sort of "alarm" that goes on, I think its from the hard drive. i think i may have fried the hard drive while trying to connect the new power supply (i hope i didn't). I've always had trouble trying figure out which wire goes into the cd drive and the hard drive.

Can someone please help me!!!!!

I'd take all the cables out, read the motherboard's manual about cables what and where to put and put everything together again.

would the amount of power the power supply produces be a factor? would it matter which cable you plug in to the hard drive?
