i have just bought a ASUS DirectCU II GeForce GTX 580 (1536 MB) Graphics Card i have a 850 power supply but i think my amps are way to low to run one of them. I noticed the card has 2 8 pins but my power supply only has 2 6 pins so im gonna use a 6x pin to 8 pin converter for the 1 8 pin but im scared to use a 8 pin to molex because i have heard they can catch on fire ??

Here is my power supply info.

The 34a scare me... think its a bit to low to run a GeForce GTX 580 ??? I have 4 rails so i have all my fans and cpu running from the 1 rail so have 3 rails left.


Im guessing my power supply is to weak to run the card ? Also is it ok to use a molex to 8 pin to power 1 of the 8 pins on a GeForce GTX 580 ??

P.s the 1 x 8 Pin (Or 2 x 4 Pin) is for the motherboard header... ( has you know you can not put your motherboard 6 pins to a gfx card )
 
if u have a look Rail 1 +12V: 40 A on the one you have shown mine is 34a i have worked out 32aps is 385 watts. So the max the card will be able to use is 385 watts but i think that is way to low....
 
I was thinking my power supply will be ok.
Because id have 1 8 pin running from 1 of the 34a rails and a molex to 8 pin so the other 8 pin running off another 34a rail. ....

 
And ?? I have asked if i run the card from 2 rails of 34a each then would i have enough power. 1 8 pin would be cumming from the 34a rail and the other 8 pin would come from another rail which is 34a ...
 
Alright listen. A GTX 580 uses a max of 250w, and 250/12 is just under 21 amps. You would need to suck down 400w of power to go over your 34a rail. You could technically run a GTX590 off a 34a rail.

And a 40a rail would be good. 21 amps for the GPU leaving 19 for the rest of the system.
 
That PSU does not have 34a... this is what i am talking about, it is a scam.

I know, I was just pointing out his error in thinking that a GTX 580 needed more than 385w of power! That other PSU is a no-name piece of crap. If you read my posts, I'm very vocal about telling everyone to stick to Antec, Seasonic, XFX, Corsair, and Enermax supplies.
 
VetteDude could i ask you said "400w of power to go over your 34a rail." but im guessing my 6 pins run off 1 rail and my molexs run from another rail ? Its a 4 rail psu so what im trying to say is if it is a 4 rail psu ( which it say it is ) is i put the 2 6 pins into a 8 pin conveter which will run from rail 1 then get a molex to 6 pin which would run off rail 2 then it would have to grab the 400w from 2 rails ? Am i right or wrong ? At the moment im running my motherboard headers from the 1 rail and my fans and motherboard from the other rail. So have 2 rails left....
 

Who knows. On good units the rails are labeled. But on a trash unit its hard to tell. Its probably not a 4 rail supply anyways, those are expensive to make. Its probably 1 rail that splits up into "4"

Your logic is good, but on a bad supply it doesn't work like that. And 400w is the maximum power you can draw from each "34amp" rail. But again, its not real 34amp rails. That would mean you have 136a of 12v power, which is 1600w of power. Good luck drawing 1600w safely from it 😉
 
I had a
Nvidia Geforce 9800 GX2 1024MB running from the power supply for a year and has u can tell from the name that is 2 cards which eats power ...

Im guessing ill have to save for a new power supply be for i even try the card :)
 
ive checked on http://www.hwcompare.com/9170/geforce-9800-gx2-vs-geforce-gtx-580/
and shows this new ASUS DirectCU II GeForce GTX 580 will run at 47 Watts (24%) higher than my old card.... My old card ran fine for a year... was playing big games with it and even overclocked it...
 
We're just giving you advice. If you want to risk plugging your GTX 580 into that thing go ahead, but be aware that it might blow up and it might fry your 580 along with your motherboard.

The fact that your old card ran for a year is irrelevant. That just tells me that the turd of a power supply is at least a year old. That thing is a ticking time bomb, possibly quite literally. It could catch on fire.
 

a word of advice. don't go by "reference benchmarks". its not 244 watts for THAT card but up to 305 watts!

That bench is terrible. It has a generic 570 down as pulling 298w, but the TDP (max power) for a generic (reference) 570 is only 219w. This is pulled straight from Nvidia's website. http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-570/specifications

OC cards can pull more, but a stock 570 (what they specified) cannot.

be able to run 1 of the cards ? Also if i bought that power supply could i run 2 of the gtx cards in sli from this power supply?? Says its a 65A power supply...

While you won't typically hit the loads that furmark gives you, I wouldn't call it bull crap as it allows you to see worst case scenario and you can plan for that, if you get a PSU that can handle the max load (with some headroom) then you are definitely fine when not at full load like furmark

@OP get rid of that junk PSU, it probably can output 400w decently and that is about it, any decent PSU of that wattage would cost a lot more the 33

don't buy into the MAX capacity of 65 amps for the 12 volt rail. if you look at the MAX totals that would be 950 watts. what is more likely would be a CONTINUOUS load of 80% of the rated total output of 800 watts (640 watts) on the 12 volt rails of 53 amps.
just don't run furmark with the power limiter circumvented on the cards and your fine with that PSU.
