.pps file not opening, yet MS Powerpoint Viewer is set in File Associations

Although Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer is set for .pps in File Associations, when I click on such a file (as an email attachment extension) it doesn't open; why?

can you save it to your pc first and then open it?

Yes indeed - and this is how I'm having to manage the problem - but it's very inconvenient. Other attachments don't give this problem with Thunderbird (my usual email client).

Now a comment for rgd1101:
Can you elaborate on your statement "email app doesn't know how to open it"? How can I get Thunderbird to open such attachments?

I'd welcome further comments from anyone.
