Here is an MSI from Adorama -

https://www.adorama.com/msirs11te089.html

CPU
Intel Core i7-11700K 8C/16T 3.6-4.9GHz 16MB Cache

Chipset
Intel Z590

Motherboard
MSI Z590

CPU Cooling
Liquid 120

Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10GB GDDR6X

16GB DDR4 3000MHz (8GB x 2)

LAN
1x RJ45 (2.5GbE) Intel I225-V

Wireless LAN
Intel Wi-Fi 6 Ax200 2x2 802.11ax (2.4GBps)

Here is a PC Part Picker list I put together.

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/MadAlienist/saved/#view=MfCjHx
  • CPU Intel Core i5-11600K 3.9 GHz 6-Core Processor $254.99
  • CPU Cooler Noctua NH-D15S chromax.black 82.51 CFM CPU Cooler $99.95
  • Motherboard MSI Z590 PRO WIFI ATX LGA1200 Motherboard $199.99
  • Memory Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory $76.99
  • Storage Samsung 980 Pro 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive $189.99
  • Video Card Asus GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB TUF GAMING OC Video Card $1530.00
  • Case Corsair iCUE 4000X RGB ATX Mid Tower Case $134.99
  • Power Supply Corsair RMx (2021) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply $139.99
  • Operating System Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit $108.78
  • Total: $2735.67
Downsides to the MSI is that the RAM is slower and I don't know some of the Part's brands? The downside to my build is the price is bit higher and the CPU is an i5. I do not want the extra cost of Alder Lake. I am fairly confident on the GPU price. Another upside is the MB is a bit better with WIFI 6e and BT 5.2.

Thoughts?

Noctua maintains a database of suitable coolers for many processors.
Here is the one for the i5-11600K:
https://ncc.noctua.at/cpus/model/Intel-Core-i5-11600K-1280
The NH-U12s redux is about $50.

On the psu, buy the next step up 850w.
A psu will only draw the power demanded of it, regardless of the max capability. Usually, the 750-850w price delta is small.

I think I would hang on a bit to see what alder lake brings.
It is looking like yet another boost in IPC which is exactly what you are looking for.
Scalpers are going after the big guy, 12900K.
But, I think the I5-12600K is going to be available and a real winner. No overclocking needed, let the turbo boost do the job. You can pre-order from newegg for $319...

  1. You have gone for a pricey CPU cooler, which pairs better with the i7 then the i5, you could save a little there with a decent 120mm tower cooler. (120mm radiator for an i7-11700k, not ideal)
  2. Do you need WiFi?
  3. Probably some CL18 3000 is what they have in there. Not a deal breaker since memory prices are quite low at the moment.
  4. Do you need a 980 Pro? 980 Evo is plenty fast for general use and gaming, or even cheaper ones like an Intel 660p.
  5. I'd like to see an 850W with the 3080, but I don't think the RMx will let you down even at 750W.

Some of those changes would get you into a i7 pretty easily.

Maybe also comparison shop for a Ryzen 5800X?

Thanks for the input.

  1. Any suggestions on model or brand of a cheaper cooler. I see some cheaper and smaller Noctua coolers that would save a small amount?
  2. Yes on the wifi.
  3. That was my guess. Since this is for my daughter who is a pretty competitive overwatch player I wanted as much speed as possible.
  4. I could be flexible on the M.2. We have a secondary SSD (4TB I think) for the second drive.
  5. I have gone back and forth on the 750 vs 850. PCPartPicker says I'm fine. I may upgrade it.
In looking at the CPU, I am not certain I will get a big bottleneck using an i5 vs an i7. I kind wish alder lake had come out 6 mos ago. Id like an i5 alder lake but that bumps the price assuming I can get the chip and the MB.

Not sure you need a RTX3080 for Overwatch...for competitive play (high FPS, medium/low settings, 1080p) it should be all about the CPU, so I agree on the i7 for that (could make an argument for the i9 actually). 3070 or 3070Ti might save you a buck, though at scalper prices, it may not matter.

Scythe Mugen 5 Black Edition is a decent cooler for about $60.
Could probably squeeze in 3600 memory, same RGB sticks they are around $90
1TB Intel 660p is about $90, 1TB SX8200 Pro $100, Samsung 980 is $120

I got a 3080Ti for 1400 (1500 after taxes) from Newegg, so I call that a win even though it was more than I wanted to pay. I was only 'selecting' water cooling capable cards, so it took me longer than it should have.

In other generations, intel performance was not much tied to ram speeds. Theoretically, DDR5 will be the thing to get, but many initial motherboards will be DDR4 and cheaper.

Thanks for the tip on noctua. I have been thinking about alder lake, but this is for my daughter, who while a good gamer, is not tech savvy. We’re also afraid that some of the older games she likes may not get their DRM updated.

So I went the other way with an AMD 5600x. :).
