Excuse me ???? Register set is one of the corner stones of a ISA. ever seen assembler code ? its nothing *but* register names.

Sorry no electronic part is part of the ISA since the SX360 in the 70.

Back in mid 2002 I posted the information on how to get to that document.

Bill has kept his word and continues to do so.

Trouble with your logic is that you neglect the political forces at work within Intel. Remember, the IA64 and Yamhill teams got separated, and Yamhill shuffled off into obscurity, so that Intel could devote most of its resources to IA64.

In the mid 90 it was clear that intel will release thee last CPU in X86 was the willimete and itanium was suppost to be release in 97.

There a others reader of aceshardware here.the KISS concept.

That so long ago.I got so much more knowlege by now compare to that time.I guess my college degree start to pay.

Before you leave some people at realworldtech was wondering how many Altix were sold in 2003.

If true, I guess that is great news for.. whom exactly ? Intel P4 customers ? Xeon customers ? Oh, or maybe intel itself that is trying to sell soon-to-be-obsolete 32 bit cpu's when everyone knows 64 bit chips and OS are on its way, and you can already buy these chips from another company ? I'm still at a loss what your point is. The fact there is no 64 bit windows version yet today, surely isnt helping selling 32 bit only cpu's over superior 32/64 one's ? the lack of a 32 bit OS didnt stop people from buing a 386 over a 286 as far as I can remember. they all hapily ran 16 bit windows 3.11

Also, surely you read the reports HP is about to replace some Xeon based servers with opteron ? Yes, replace not add. Same for IBM. Intel has always enjoyed a 95% or so marketshare in the x86 server space, and once AMD's opteron gets taken seriously, I see nothing that will keep it from capturing at least half of that. Sure is great for intel if they would succeed in delaying 64 bit windows until they get their act together. And in fact, i doubt this will happen. Microsoft is not willing to lose marketshare to Linux just to please Intel.

It seems the only one waiting for 64 bit Xeons/P4s is you, and probably Dell; the rest of the world is switching to opteron/A64 if they want 64 bit readyness on x86 today.

web surfers surely won't need 64bit in the near future.
64bits are for data processing.
I don't think gamers will benefit a lot from that, not in the near future.
So 32bit is to stay for quite a while. My wild guess: 3yrs+

A fine day!

>web surfers surely won't need 64bit in the near future.

Will they need 4 GHz hyperthreading cpu's you think ?

> don't think gamers will benefit a lot from that, not in

Did they benefit a lot from their DX9 capable card ?

>64bits are for data processing.

Everything your cpu does, is "process data".

>So 32bit is to stay for quite a while. My wild guess: 3yrs+

It will stay with us for at least another decade. So ?

blahblah.. to remind you, opteron has only been on the market since april (?) '03, whereas Itanium has been out for how many years now ? Wanna take bets for 2004 ? 2005 ?

SO he miss 1 quarter according to people like you it was uppost to storm the market. In revenue opteron got crush by a 1000% margin as there almost 8XX ever sold

Just to show bad

Point is not that it only 'missed' one quarter, point is hardly any oem has had time to test it, produce a product based on it, and bring it to market; hardly any customer has had time to order one, and evaluate it before commiting to it. And anyone predicting any newproduct would storm the server market is a dire fool. How many Itaniums did intel sell in its first year ? Hardly one I think, they gave away a few thousand.

>In revenue opteron got crush by a 1000% margin as there
>almost 8XX ever sold

Got a link for that ? Regardless, I'll bet you whatever ammount you wish, opteron will outsell Itanium 3-1 in the forth quarter of this year in units. Sun alone is seeding the market with almost half as many Itaniums as Intel has sold in what, 3, 4 years ? Bookmark this thread, and check back by the end of the year. i'll change my signature to "Ignore me, I'm a dire fool" if I'm wrong. Will you ?
