Question Printer not seeing internet.

I have a Comcast modem/router on 10.0.x.x. I also have an ASUS Zen distributed network router with it's WAN port connected to the 10.0.x.x network but an internal IP range of 192.168.x.x. It seems to have worked for a couple of years. I put all my IOT devices on 10.0.x.x and the rest of the computers on 192.168.x.x. I have an HP printer that I want on 192.168 with the computers. When I try to install the HP drivers I get to a point in the install where it complains that there is no internet connection. I'm on the same wire network as the printer and my laptop can get to the internet without any issues. Is there a printer setting that should be made to allow the printer to reach the internet?

I'm sure this could trigger a long discussion on how this is the wrong way to isolate my IOT devices. First I need to get the printer working so my wife can use it for work in the morning.

Maybe printer still remembers it's previous gateway setup info? So try resetting the printer?

The Gateway is the same as the address of the router on the 192.168.x.1 network.

Did you assign printer's ip, gateway, dns manually or through dhcp? If manually, did you set the dns correctly?

Initially I used DHCP. Then I switched over to a manual IP. I copied the DNS from my comcast router settings.

Set dns to google dns 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, see if it works.

I will assume that you have the printer plugged into the same physical network as all your other PC devices on the 192.x.x.x network and not on the IOT network. Very technically you can get the printer to work on the 10.x.x.x network but life is simpler and safer if it is also on the LAN side of your router.

I am not sure on your exact model but most asus routers have a ping command. can you ping the printer. Can you ping the printer from any of your pc. Does the printer have any way to display the IP that it was given.

If you can ping the printer your network is basically correctly set up.

Why does the printer want to go to the internet. I would hope it does not require some subscription service to function. Most times you do not want a printer to have any access to the internet....for pretty much the same reason people isolate IOT things.

If it really needs the internet check that the printer gateway IP and DNS are correct.
