Printer Sharing Question

My goal is to share a printer on the windows 7 computer with a OS-x mac. I tried installing the printer software on the mac but for some reason it won't install. I have read that I should be able to print to the PC network and print to the directly connected printer but need to have SMB running. Do you agree this is the route to follow and if so how do I enable SMB on a Win-7 box?
