My new PC hangs when rebooted, likely because of bent CPU socket pins.

Windows wants to install patch 1607, but every time it does, it downloads the patch, reboots, starts to process it and hangs at 23% completed.

Then when I power cycle it restores the previous version.

Any ideas?

Your problem is not the patch failing.

If you're not interested in fixing the actual problem, I'm not sure what other advice anyone could give you.

No, a workaround for installing a patch without resetting (I can powercycle).

I tried powering off and on after it did the first reset, but that still hung. If there's no other process I just won't get the patch.

No, actually, that's a bad analogy. Being able to power cycle is not like a flat tire.

No, I disagree. You mentioned your "new pc" meaning you haven't been running it for a while. They don't just put those pins there for their health. This is the first manifestation of the issue. I am SURE you will see other issues, probably some major ones, as time goes on.

Its really not a big deal to remove the cpu and fix this unless you really damaged the socket. Or you can continue to believe everything is fine when it clearly is not.

The concept of solving one issue because there are problems solving the underlying issue isn't that hard. Or it shouldn't be. Luckily trying to do the patch working around rebooting seems like it might have worked - at least the nagging has ended. The system has had no other issues from the reboot problem.

The concept is quite clear. You are still simply patching a leak, one thats only going to get bigger. A band-aid may stop the bleeding of a bullet, but you still have a hole.

They don't put those pins there for show, clearly you have already found an issue, and while you may not have found another RIGHT NOW, it doesn't mean it won't manifest itself in short order. In the end you're going to go through pain every time you need a Windows upgrade of some sort. It is unfathomable to me that someone would spend all that money on a PC only for it to have a problem that is going to continue to manifest itself, that can be fixed with an hour or so of work, tops. Vs the countless hours you will spend jerking around with this reboot problem, and have spent already.

:pfff:

I'd fire any employees/vendors/clients that I had with such thinking. Looking for the easy way out instead of fixing the problem underlies the concept: FAIL MODE.

Sadly it ran its course before the first reply - there was no answer. The question was, given the issue and that fixing it is not happening, what are the options, and the only replies were to disagree about fixing the pins.
