I bought 10 128 Gb USB Flash Drives from a supplier in China by the name of Gogoea, paid $ 39.00 a piece, they are Kingston Data Traveler USB 2.0, they all failed to work after a couple of times using them, they loose information, some aren't even recognized, but in general they are not wokring. I heard that there is a way to fix this problem, even though you have to sacrifice capacity, reducing them to probably 64 or 32 Gb, but that is beter than loosing them. I had to reformat some of them, but I couldn't format them in FAT 32 of NTFS, I had to format them in ExFAT, the new format of Microsoft, but not only there is a problem to read them on Windows XP or Vista without Service Pack 1, you have to update Windows XP to be able to read this new format, and still they are not working. Any help will be highly appreciated.

It sounds like you got ripped off. A lot of flash products (especially camera cards) are created by using a different product and then putting an official looking logo on them.

E-Bay is notorious for allowing this type of transaction as they don't get involved. I got a fake camera card and had to deal with Paypal which would only file my complaint and get my money reimbursed. These sellers don't have any criminal charges filed against them and continue to sell fake products.

I'd bet anything your drives are fake.

Timbaleiro, I strongly suggest that you consider that the life time of these fake 128GB drives could be very short and purchase of more may be a waste of money from this point of view. As pointed out earlier they are constructed with inferior componant. Some correspondents in this thread have already reported failures after relatively short periods of use.

Also I sugeest you confirm that you can work with video or photo files whish after all are a major reason for having large capacity flash drives. I find that these can be transfered to the Flash drive but so far I have been uable to use MPEG-1 video files with a codec such as Snap Streans latest Beyond TV even though a Kanguru 32 GB NTFS formared Flash Drive shows no such difficiulty.
In this regard I have asked their technical people for help to be sure the problem is with my exFAT flashdrive and not with their codec dealing with files from this new format. More on this to come.

Also I must agree that using my fake flash drive with Windows 7 is to be recommended over other OS.

Having tried several formats exFAT seems to be superior. ie. more usable capacity and more accurate file reproduction and transfer. Those with XP must download a special drive avaliable free from Microsoft. You can then format and use these with XP. Make sure you are using XP with SP 2 or SP3 before downloading the driver.

I have 6 USB DataTravelers 200 128GB Flash Drives. I tried to format them with windows XP and it DID NOT work then I talked to a Microsoft Tech and he told me how to get these to work, The message from the Tech is below, PLEASE READ IT. It worked for all 6 of my Flash Drives. The Format Utility Tool is free to download and works very well. Message Below;
Please be aware that because of the huge capacity, do not format the 128GB flash drive using Windows. Windows can only format drives up to 32 GB and will damage the 128GB drive.
You have to use "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8".
I have attached a website that you can download such a software.

http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197

Look for & Click on the words "Primary Download Site Location: EXTREME Overclocking" NOT on the blue box to the right that says Recover.
The Primary Download Site is free. You might have to temporarily disable your firewall. I had to disable my firewall, Download the software then enable the firewall after the download. It was pretty simple for me.

Also,I recommend to back up all files.
Because of the large capacity, users tend to copy files onto the drives and not have back up.
In an unlikely event when there is a drive malfunction, you will lose all data if you do not have any back up.
If this message helped you or not please email me at rbc1965@yahoo.com and let me know. If you need help or have any questions about the download or disabling & enabling your firewall Please email me. My name is Robert at rbc1965@yahoo.com. I wish someone would have helped me when I needed it. Well, Im here for you if needed. I hope to hear from all of you.
Robert.

I wouldn't bother trying to raise a dispute with Paypal. They asked me to 'take the drive to a dealer or a disinterested party' or words to that effect, to get a statement on company letterhead about why they thought the drives were fake and so on. They gave me very little time to find anybody after keeping me waiting for about 2 months before I pushed them into a response.
To be fair on them, they did warn me just after I'd bought them to reverse the money through Paypal, but since a colleague had a drive he'd bought said it was OK, I went ahead. Later the bloke said his had failed, and he'd got a refund in two weeks through Paypal.
Still, I'm a bit disillusioned with the Paypal guarantee. It would be quite difficult to get somebody to put their name to a document like they requested - what would be in it for them? I couldn't see why a Stat. Dec. wouldn't suffice.
I suppose you could use them as wedges for doors....

Bought an original kingston datatraveler 128, worked for about 3 months, then says I have to format it, took it back to recover the data, as i need the data, couldnt be recovered by hardcore data recoverers, took it back to kingston, they gave me a replacement, needless to say still pissed I lost the data, they gave me a replacement, 3 months later, stuck with same sitiuation, these flash drives are terrible and shouldnt be on the market, be it original or fake, these things dont last very long.

These are another set of Con artiste I ordered 50 1TB hard Drives from them they sent 7 flash drives instead.

Hi there,
I bought 10 off these and they came fomatted in Xfat , which can be read by Vista and Windows 7 , because of the
architecture of the chip, to change the file allocation table , you need to download HP USB disk storage format tool V2.1.8 , insatall this on your machine and you must run as administrator, first choose format as fat32 , ( don't do a quick format )which can be read by all systems, it will take about an hour , when you have done this , you may be able to then format them in NTFS , if not just use fat32 but it will give you a127gig stick anyway.
When you put the stick in your machine , it may ask you to allow windows to correct errors , if it can't read any corrupt files , agree and your memory stick should then be alright.

yes rkaye, you are right. the only way to protect one is to buy via credit card paypal where you can have recourse. I paid direct to Bank of China, they will not do anything, it looks like everything in China is fake.
but we are at fault, we look to buy cheap. also the original are at fault they overprice everything. there got to be some middle ground. in the future please people you can buy anything but make sure the way you pay will give you the option to claim back your money.
Daniel.

Here is the problem. Devolopment costs are huge, and these manufactures need to recover their devolopment and production costs, and they need to pay their engineers what they are worth.
Then there is the problem with counterfitting, which hurts manufactures (tarnishes their name and reputation amoung other things. People are always eager to buy the cheapest crap they can find and that fuels the counterfit products.
If people would not be so cheap, then the counterfitters would not have anyone to sell to, and the main stream manufatures would recover their devolopment costs and prices would eventually come down.

Techguy_77 is correct. The very same things are happening with car repair parts.
People are so damn cheap and expect to get the same quality parts for
next to nothing. Now we end up with these chain parts stores selling cheap Chinese parts that are pure garbage. Then other stores have to end up doing
the same thing to compete and stay in business until all that is left is NAPA
stores who can then charge extreme prices because they are the only
people left with the real stuff. The only people competing are the garbage sellers.
