Today, I was working on a switch. It began with the router failing... So, I went out bought a new router and tested and made sure that was all good... Then, I hooked the router up to the switch. The switch would work for about a few minutes giving internet then completely drop it. It is a Cisco Small Business SF100-24-Port Switch the current setup is... Modem > Router > Switch. I do not know a ton about this and cannot figure out the issue. I find it peculiar that it works briefly before completely shutting off the network. I will note, the router does give wireless. Is there something that should be configured that I am missing? Also another note is that the computers that are supposed to be hooked up to the switch had static IPs would this have an effect on it? Sorry if this is vague, networking is not my field of expertise. One last note, the system worked completely fine the day before.

It is an unmanaged switch so there is nothing you have to do with the switch. now when the internet drops what do the lights on the switch say? Also do the PC say Connection unplugged or no? If they do not it doesn't sound like a swtich issue then but a Router config maybe? everything setup the same as the old one?

The switch blinks green, even after the connection drops. None of them have ever turned an amber color. We have 11 clients hooked up currently... And I believe.... 3 of them are storage servers. If that effects anything.

Are they able to access stuff on the LAN after the internet goes down or no?

and also if they are green or amber on a switch doesn't matter. One color usually mean it is connected as 1Gbps (Usually green) and amber is when they are connected at either 100/10 Mbps.

Hmm, I am not sure... that is something I had not tested yet. I am assuming no... Every computer had the ! with a triangle icon. It wasn't connecting to anything... We are getting a different switch tomorrow to try.

Ah ok yea a Yellow with a ! mean that the PC is detecting a connection on the other end but can't get to the internet.

a few things to check.

1) If it happens again check to see if you can still access other rescoures like NAS's and Network printers.

If you can it is NOT the switch

if you can't then it may still not be the switch but some settings with the router and if that is the case what router did you have, what did you replace it with, what kind of Internet do you have, is it a dynamic or static IP?

Also it could be DNS issues as well. Is there a Domain server? is the router IP the same as it was before? Do you have any custom DNS settings in the PC's / Routers?
