Problem with Memory upgrade on HP Compaq dc5700

Hi

I have an old HP Compaq dc5700 Small Form Factor PC with 1gb of ram
cpu: intel dual E2160 1.80GHZ
Intel Q963 Chipset

I decided to upgrade the ram to 4gb (maximum supported)


According to the user manual:

It has 4 slots

It needs "non-ECC DDR2 PC2-5300 (667-MHz)"

my question is: does anyone know if this pc is compatible with 2x2gb?? As it is not mentioned in the user manual, the only memory configuration they mention about getting 4gb ram is to use 4x1gb

and if its compatible with 2x2gb... should i go with this configuration or with 4x1gb???

As i understand, 2x2gb is a better configuration, but i am not sure how it is like with old pc´s.

I am planning to use this memory:
Kingston 2gb ddr2 pc2-5300 667mhz

Hi,

Your system has 4 slots and each slot can hold upto 1 GB. Anything above 1 GB on a slot will not be compatible. The highest maximum configuration is 4 x 1 GB modules.

I have seen comments on the Kingston 2gb ddr2 pc2-5300 667mhz newegg product site

from people successfully installing 2gb ram on an hp dc7700 or hp s3200t, which if i search for memory upgrade using the site you provided i get the same results as with my dc5700; no mention about 2gb ram compatibility.

Is there another way to be 100% sure if 2gb ram stick are compatible with my pc before buying??

Hi,

2 GB modules will not be recognized. Each models memory controller is designed to take only so much as mentioned. Very seldom, a system will recognize more than the specified amount. That said, your system HP Compaq dc5700 SFF will only hold 1 GB on each slot.

I have a dozen dc5700s and I have 2x2gb in one and it works fine. I think the key is low density.
