i recently installed a new fx-9590 cpu, crosshair v formula z motherboard and corsair h100i v2 240mm water cooler. initially i had issues with random crashes and cheanged a few things in bios and it all seemed fine. i can play black ops 3 for hours on end on pretty high settings and same with a few other games. my issue first started when i was playing hitman. i was playing fine for most of a day then *boom* hard hang.. i rebooted and everything seemed fine in bios and temps read ok. so i relaunched the game. it periodically hangs seeming to be random but i dont think it is.. a few days later doom was released and i had access to my preorder. i downloaded and played for 10-15 hours of gp with no issue. then again. hard hang. it now does it periodically. sometimes 10 minutes. sometimes 30. sometimes 1-3 hours but innevitably it still does it. i have tried stressing with p95. the first attempt it passed the 640k test then hung. every attempt since has resulted to not seeing all 8 workers hitting the first test successfully. i have tried various settings in bios but nothing works. any help would be appreciated.

specs are:
nzxt phantom full e-atx tower
crosshair v formula z motherboard
amd fx-9590
12gb corsair vengeance 1600 (manually set to 1.5v 9-9-9-24 timings, t2 command)
corsair rm1000 psu
xfx r9 390 8gb card (not oc)
corsair h100i v2 240mm watercooler (fit at the top of chassis below 2x 200mm fans in a push/pul config)

Solution
You would get slightly better results at 5.00Ghz but creep up to it slow. Try 4.9GHz first at same settings.
You pic shows Corsair Link at idle. Temps would be in the 65-70C range during the Benchmark.
A screen shot with HWMonitor "open" during the benchmark will give me better info.
HeHe were not done yet my friend.
i had an 8320 before this and game it away to my brother -_- would rather sort this cpu out. its not like it doesnt work but something is happening under heavy loads yet ive not noticed it.

That's a good point; the VRM needs cooling that isn't provided by a liquid cooler. A fan like an Antec SpotCool (or another solution) has to be installed to cool the VRM. The note "Due to the high TDP, please be noted there are limitations while using this CPU(i.e. special thermal required..)" can't be ignored.

@OP, in the short term, you might try undervolting and/or slightly underclocking to get stable. What's almost certainly happening is either 1) your CPU is not stable at stock clocks and voltage, or 2) your motherboard is not able to deliver that much clean power. Underclocking would fix either.

I agree. I also thought about that but since he got an FX 9590 I assumed he wanted to run at stock. I would definitiley underclock and undervolt a bit. It will help with temps, power consumption and stability.

on this mobo where are the vrm's located?
i would prefer not to underclock as i should be able to run it at its set stock speed so would try cooling the vrm's firstly, i got the liquid cooler as it's pretty much required for this cpu. i tried a noctua nh-d15 and that wasnt adequate.

If you look in this picture, the VRMs are under the black heatsinks above and to the left of the CPU socket:

in hwmonitor which are vrm temps? all i have under motherboard section is "cpu" and "mainboard"temp figures

There is no legitimate sensor for vrm temps on any and board I've ever seen.

For starters just drop in bios & disable turbo core mate.
Its a worthless feature & will only boost 2 cores whole dropping the rest to 4ghz or so.
It also pushes obscene voltage through the vrm's.

already have done.. nothing. tried switching to dohcp etc. disabled ecc c6 etc nothing worked. ive got it running certain games fine but games like doom and hitman bug out with an hour or so and prime 95 wont run for any longer than 10-15minutes.

it wont let me show the image using the tools here so here is a direct link

temps all seem normal. the temp i circled (crudely) hit around 60-70 under prime95 but still hangs. if i up llc to 25% that can hit 80c if it doesnt freeze beforehand. i also upped llc to 50% and saw that temp almost hitting 90c before it froze.

another note to add.. although i am failry sure this is a hardware issue. i did check event viewer and was getting a 7000 event i.d relating to amd adaptivesleep failing to start to to file not being located. (disabled it in services.msc) also had a load perf event where the performance counters in the registry were corrupt (rebuilt them in cmd) havnt had the errors again since but it was odd how they showed up each time just before a freeze.

Although you don't want to underclock, I highly recommend it just as a test. If underclocking 2-400mhz fixes your crashes, you know for certain it's a heat/power/voltage related problem, and not an unrelated hardware failure.

The voltage regulators are what those heatsinks are actually cooling. They're underneath the heatsinks, so what you'd need to do is get more airflow across the heatsinks.

i can fit a 200/230mm fan on the side panel so i can give that a go? other than that its going to be hard to fix a fan in there over the vrms as my rad is kind of in the way. i was wondering if the rad itself could be helping to heat the vrms? as it is fairly close to them. failing that i could always take the 2.5"bay out of the bottom and fit the rad there i think as it does have space for 2x120mm fans. that way i could have the top 2x 200mm blowing down and possibly a 230mm blowing in from the side? i will try underclocking later on. atm its fine for videos and playing black ops3.

yeah i did read that although this board is specified everywhere as the single best baord for this cpu. i dont understand making a 220w cpu without a board that can handle that kind of draw.

There's no way you can mount an Antec SpotCool to cool the VRM?

link me the antec. but i will be honest. if you look at how a 240mm rad sits in an nzxt phantom full e-atx tower beneath 2x 200m fans in push pull you wouldnt be suprised if i said not likely 😛
