When I start up the first computer I ever built I get the screen where it shows my processor and BIOS (where I can push delete to access the setup) and if I let it run I just get a black screen with a bunch of information.

It looks like this:

Pri. Slave Disk: None Parallel Ports: 378
Sec. Master Disk: None DDR2 at banks: 0 1 2 3
Sec. Slave Disk: None

IDE Channel 3. Master Disk HDD S.M.A.R.T. capability....... Disabled

PCI Devices Listing...

Then it lists all of the devices like USB, IDE, Display controller etc.

If I put in the windows XP disk and hit F12 when loading, I can boot from CD rom. Then the system will begin to load things from the XP disk for a few minutes, and finally say Starting Windows.. or something similar. My computer then shuts down.

Anyone have any ideas what is causing this? This is my first computer that I have built from scratch, here are the specs:

AAAAAAArgh, you're killin me.........
unplug the PSU, remove the CMOS battery, toggle the reset jumper, wait 15 seconds, replace CMOS battery, plug the PSU back in and turn it on, enter BIOS, select correct BIOS settings for your configuration (assuming you know what the correct settings are), exit while saving changes, double-check all your connections (Again, I'm assuming you know what your doing), open CD/ROM, insert boot-disk, format, partition (if you want), load OS, update system drivers, .........
If you are unable to do this then the system is not configured and/or assembled correctly and/or has defective hardware/software.

hope this helps

Thanks for the quick response. I am officially on the new computer as we speak, only problem is that I am using my old computers IDE hard drive and not the new SATA 250gig I bought.

That leads me to believe that it is the hard drive that is the problem?

I plugged the male power connecter to the back of the hard drive, and then used one of the provided SATA cords and plugged that into the correct? spot on the motherboard. There are 6 slots for the SATA I believe, and then another slots for a different type of SATA or something.

There is a picture of my motherboard, I have the hard drive plugged into the very bottom yellow socket.

hmm it seems like the computer just shuts off randomly now with the new hard drive in.

When I used my old hardrive there were no problems other than I couldnt have my cd/dvd rom in since there is only one IDE slot.

Is the new hard drive overheating or something? I was reading through the Motherboard manual and it said I can download drivers onto a floppy disk, only problem is that no computer in this house has a floppy drive =/

Is your DVD Drive on the same cable as your IDE drive? If so check tomake sure that both devices aren't listed as Slave. I know its not the new HDD as I've got 2 of the same one in system and had not problems with them. My best guess is that its you PSU. For what you have for a system your PSU is quiet small. I would recommend you get something with 500w+ of power at continuous not max output. PC Power & Cooling makes some great PSU's but they cost an arm and a leg.

DVD drive uses IDE, but the hard drive I am having problems with is a SATA,so it is not connected. =/

I hope I don't have to order anything else, but like I said the computer just shuts off randomly when loading the XP CD or looking at the BIOS.

I might just use the old hardrive for now, and hopefully make the DVD a slave on the same IDE cord. I need the DVD player in order to download the drivers for my video card. For some reason when I tried to download them offline it said that it couldnt detect "drivers or hardware" or something.

First, did you reinstall Windows on the hard drive once you moved it to the new computer? Otherwise, Windows will read in its HAL (Hardware abstraction layer, essentially a set of drivers telling Win what chipset etc is in the system) from the hard disk, but it will be the wrong HAL, for the old system, not for your new system.
Second, my guess is that your PS can't provide enough +12V power for that power monster video card. This would be consistent with your system shutting off as soon as it tried to go into a graphics video mode.

If it isnt turning on at all now, have you tried taking the SATA drive back out? It seems that it is a drive issue and not a PSU issue, your Antec 450Watt should power everything just fine, unless it is a faulty one.

I was told that the heatsink might not be in contact with the CPU, but I confirmed that it is.

Right now nothing happens when I turn on the power button, but maybe I forgot to plug something in because it was working earlier.

It turns out that the computer would just turn off when it was doing anything, but at one point I was able to partition the hard drive with no problems, then it shut off.

When I use my old IDE hard drive on it it seemed to work fine, I was able to go online and run dxdiag. It didnt shut off at all.

Also, the PSU fan never turns on that I have noticed so far. Everything appears to be wired correctly, so I am not sure why. I might order a new PSU right now so I can have it on friday.
