Problem with Pinball Arcade

Trying to run Pinball Arcade on a WinXP SP2. I was always able to run it in
the past but recently it won't. All that happens is that the monitor flashes
for a split second and nothing else. It's like it's not even there. I can run
it in safemode without problems. I've tried to install it with the
compatibility tool but it still doesn't run. Tried starting the computer with
everything in the start-up disabled but still no go.
I have the newest version of DirectX. (Is this the problem?)
When I run the DirectX troubleshooting tool all is OK. If I run the DirectX
tool from the CD (an older version) it says that several files are missing.
I don't understand what changed.
Any help would be appricated.

Thanks,
Rick J.

Hi Rick,

There's something that Safemode is preventing from running
that you're missing when you disable your startups. Could
it be that an antivirus or system suite is causing this issue?

Works with XP Home SP2 here. SP2 includes the latest DirectX (9.0c).

Have you checked the video and sound accelerator manufacturer's web
sites to determine if there is a driver version with better DirectX 9
compatability? If you post video accelerator information, driver
versions, and system information, others with similar equipment may be
able to compare their setings with yours.

You also might try disabling applications that launch at Windows startup
one at a time to see if one of them is creating a conflict with Pinball.
you might need to move items out of the Start folders or use MSCONFIG
utility to temporarily disable some of them.

Through trial and error I found something running under the "Services" tab in
msconfig that was causing the problem. The service (that I do not need) was
turned on while working with a tech support person when trying to get Turbo
Tax to install. All appears fine now.

Thanks for the input,
Rick J.

Hi Rick,

Good. I knew it had to be a software conflict.
Glad the situation got sorted. Good going! 🙂

Cheers,
Jimmy.
