This is a long shot, but I’m going to try anyway.

I have a Brother MFC-J200 printer/scanner, an older model without a touchscreen.

I was experiencing scanning issues that produced white streaks on scanned images. I managed to physically replace the CIS scanning unit with one from another Brother printer I own. I checked the part numbers and they are the same.

According to the service manual, after replacing the CIS unit, you’re supposed to reset the CIS travel settings in maintenance mode.

Here’s the problem: I cannot access the maintenance mode intended for service personnel; I can only access the maintenance mode meant for end users.

The machine doesn’t boot up correctly. After startup, the scanning unit performs its usual patrol but then fails to find its rest position. Instead, it starts grinding the gears of the rail, and the machine displays
"Init Unable AF"

From the "Init Unable AF" state, I cannot access the service maintenance mode—only the end-user maintenance mode.

I realize I’m hoping for a miracle.
