problem with windows Update

Several days ago i upgraded one of my Computers(Gateway e-machine W5243) from Vista Home premium to Windows 7.0. I did a clean install.
it has now been almost 4 days since the upgrade, and Windows Update just 'spins its wheels' but not showing that it has found updates. i went to the microsoft Solutions Center and ran their troubleshooter. it supposedly fixed the background transfer service but did not fix the Windows Update. it said the problem with the former was that the service information was either missing or corrupted.
So I openeed Windows update, and it has been going now for tqwo hours and no updates have been listed as available.
The pogram ii installed is legitimate, and t was Activated on-line.
I have no idea why it isn't working. i would appreciate any advice/recommendations offered.

windows update at first run can take a serious amount of time, its too early to say if its not working.

Two things to try.
First, download the standalone Windows 7 service pack 1 (assuming you don't already have it, you can check via System)

Second, if that doesn't work (or you already have SP1 installed) you may need to reinstall windows update agent.

Also like Zero mentioned, the update process can take flipping forever to sort itself out the first time you run it. Not 4 days long mind you but a few hours is not unheard of.

azaran i have downloaded and installed the update agent. i will run the Windows Update again andsee what happens.

Making a windows iso with spk1 and all updates using applications like nlite, rt7 lite or win toolkit, which can slipstream all necessary updates is a good way to go. To download all of these again which when you reinstall windows just wastes bandwidth, time.

3. Windows update downloader ......NB: Uls here have not been updated.
4. WHDownloader
