Problem

My nearly 2 year old GeForce4 Ti4200 w/ 64MB card seems to have died on me. It still works, just that the display looks garbled in some places, and sometimes hangs with a black screen. If it was only in Windows, I wouldn't be worrying about it, but it also happens in the BIOS opening screen.

Bottom line, is there anything I can do to "fix" it? I already tried dusting it, and re-placing back the HSF to the core, also with a new application of AC3. Yea, I know, sounds extremely unlikely, but damn, it's US$150 down the drain.

Also, where do you think the problem lies? Thanks.

Have you tried reseating it in the AGP slot? I had a similar problem yesterday: Whenever I went into a game the screen would go funny with pink stripes everywhere. At first I thought it may have been due to my 70MHz AGP Frequency, but I turned out it wasn't seated in the AGP slot properly, so after that it worked fine.

Yep, did that several times. I even flicked it while it was running. Nothing happened.

you could try seriously underclocking the card with something like RivaTuner.

Obviously it would affect performance, but it might make it more stable.

if it does, then maybe stick some ramsinks on and better cooling to try to get it running at the proper speed again.

Another thought:
Can you try the card in another PC? could be something wrong with the mobo rather than the card.

Trying to save a dying card with drastic measures like that is a wasted effort.

How long have you had the card? If you've had it a while, its not $150 down the drain. The things money buys are temporary, if you get use out of them, even when they become valueless, your money has not been wasted.

Time to buy a new card.

Me: are you saying I can't provide?
Me: cause I know I can provide.
Me: oh and I can provide money too😉
Rachel:): why do we need money when we can just stay in our room and have sex all day?

Ahh yes, I suppose I could do that, that is if I can first let it not crash (it crashes even in Safe Mode, yuck).

And yep, I've confirmed it's my card. I have a spare GF2MX, and it's working fine.

bah. I'm still getting use out of my Geforce DDR I bought at least 4 years ago. 2 years is too short a lifetime by FAR.

Try fiddling with your AGP settings in the BIOS (AGP 2x, Fastwrites OFF, etc etc) - you never know, you might be able to get into windows...

I'll try doing that thanks, though I doubt it'll help. Funny characters appear in the BIOS screen, and even in the gfx boot screen. Not sounding too good.

I'll make one really good clean tomorrow and see what happens. If it's still broke, I'll try selling it to some of those 2nd-hand hardware shops. Damn shame, here I was, planning on getting it a better looking HSF on it's 2nd birthday.

If it helps any of you folks, it's an Inno3D card. Fan gave me problems most of it's life too. It wasn't an easy card to work with, but it was fairly cheap when it was first released. Guess I got what I paid for.

*kicks self in groin*
*gets turned on*

Damn it! Nurse, feeding time again!
