Problems starting up, and resuming windows

I have a windows 7 pc, 64-bit. More and more frequently I'm getting the following problem. Once I have finished using my pc I usually put it into sleep mode. The next day I want to use it, I usually just click the mouse and it should start. But increasingly often it doesn't start properly. I will hear it spring into life at the tower, but the screen just says "no signal". So I then have to switch it off at the tower, wait say 10 secs and switch it on again. It then seems to come on, displays a symbol saying "resuming windows", but then I get a black screen with a flickering cursor which doesn't respond to anything. So I then switch the tower off and on again and a message comes up inviting me either to select system resume (which I ignore) or to dump the resume values and start it normally. I select that option to avoid the whole rigmarole again. It then starts, but says it wants to check the disc for inconsistencies. I allowed it to do that once, but now I just press any key to avoid this (as it takes ages) and it finally starts! Once it has started, the pc works with no apparent problem!
It seems like something is wrong as I'm more often having these problems getting the pc started from sleep mode. I'm sorry I'm not computer-savvy at all so feel free to address me as a know-nothing :). Thanks for any help!

Solution
Sleep never worked well in W7 because it powers down some things that don't start back up properly. I would suggest that you disable sleep and hibernation and instead use a blank screen saver to set the monitor to power off after some short interval.
