Hi there folks, this has always been my go to source for info regarding anything tech, and here I am now With my first un-googleable unsearchable problem.

Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
ATI Radeon HD5470
intel i3 M350 CPU
HP pavillion DV6 notebook
4.00GB RAM

Last night I decided to update my graphics driver for my HD5470, currently I am using the amd_catalyst_13.10_mobility_beta2 released november last year. I decided to go for the new 14.4 driver released a few days ago.

I downloaded it and read a few articles on updating drivers the "correct" way which was written by the lovely uninsighteful people of ATI who bear much resemblance to the devs at Windows. Anyway The 14.4 driver runs and supposedly installs fine but the screen does not flash or do anything related to what I'm used to when updating a driver. So after stupidly installing to various locations with no effect I decided to go into the device manager and try updating there, well this turned out worse as it sent me back to a driver from 2010 which is way older than the 13.10 driver.

I then opted to roll back thinking it would take me back to my 13.10 driver but Instead I got a black screen and had to reboot with a system repair check. After I logged back in I downloaded a tool to completely remove anything related to ATI on my pc, so I did this thinking it would give me a clean start. Once done I Fresh installed the 13.10 mobility driver and all went well, after reboot It showed in device manager that I was using the 13.10 version signed etc. then 5 minutes later is stops working and windows tells me the AMD driver has stopped working with two options reset - cancel.

So it reverts me back to the onbard Intel HD graphics but that driver also had a problem in device manager with a triangular exlamation mark. I updated the drivers for that through device manager and it seems to be working.

Now device manager shows that it finds my radeon HD 5470 but I cannot get any drivers to work for it now. I don't know what to do this has happened at the beginning of my week off and skyrim is calling but I can't play it now.

Sorry for the wall of text I got carried away and I'm not really good at decriptions.

Thanks for any help folks

It sounds like you've tried a lot so perhaps you've already tried this but consider doing a system restore. I have an ssd and keep this active as trim takes care of keeping it optimal and I've had no issues. If you had it off and can't do a system restore prior to all this I understand. However, this may be the "easiest" way to resolve your issue but you also may need to go back into your bios and make sure your video setting is for the gpu and not onboard only as well just to make sure (the exact terminology may differ from board to board but you get what I'm saying). Please let us know how this goes! Good luck!

Thanks,

Justin S.

Your computer has 2 GPU's, the ATI HD5470 and the Intel Onboard graphics controller.

Like my HP Pavillion notebook, regular drivers from ATI's website do not work. You must go to HP's website and get the specific driver for your laptop. Their drivers are customized to allow the switchable graphics function.

Since HP is so lazy with drivers, I am stuck with drivers from 2010, which seriously makes the laptop lag in games.

Here's a video about how to retrieve your laptop's model: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00033108

Then go to this website, select the options accordingly and get the display driver from HP: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support.html

If the laptop still gives out errors, I cannot do anything else.

Wow thanks for the fast response. I'm going to give the HP driver a shot, yet see heres the thing I had the 13.10 driver from ATI working just fine. I could switch graphics and all that.

Ive tried every single number at the back and none of them register at HP support you know These companies and there complicated techniques makes me sick.

I see, post your model number here and I'll see what I can get.

It should be something like HP Pavillion dv6 ltxxtyx (this is random) each computer has different specifications, so different drivers are required. If you can't find it anywhere, try to restart the laptop. When you turn the computer on, normally the first screen shows the model number. Or you can enter into the BIOS and see if there's anything there.

I really appreciate your help, I'm worried I've broken something and will not be able to use my radeon again.

Ok no wait thats not the one you want?

Ah, don't worry :) I messed with the laptop when I found out that there was a radeon, apart from the intel onboard gpu. I unnistalled intel's driver, so the radeon worked full time. Needless to say that the laptop was completely messed up! Nothing would show up after windows loading, there were loads of random images and strips of color! I booted into safe mode and installed the driver again, next reboot was clean and trouble free.

Looks like the computer works full time with intel, and uses radeon on heavy apps 😛

I had this same trouble when finding drivers before, you have to select the country where you live. Where do you live? And yes, that is what I wanted.

This is everything located behind my battery So many I have no idea...

hope that helps thats everything that looks important the rest is just manufacturer stuff

Thank you so much. another problem.

Ive used AMD's cleanup utility and removed signs of all their drivers ok good, but now in device manager my Intel Hd is showing this : Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Im screwed arent I

I don't know what else to say that driver on the page you linked me to is the one that my system defaults back to when I update, or something goes wrong so I do have it installed somewhere. But I've had two AMD CCC updates in past years that worked flawlessly so its not impossible to update them. I need CCC, thats about the most important thing but I dont want to downgrade now from what im used to which is the 13.10 version I have the installation file from AMD sitting on my desktop what do I do.

I'm sounding like a little kid complaining now I'm sorry, I just dont see whats gone wrong.

First install the intel driver, then reboot, boot into safe mode again and install Radeon's drivers. The radeon driver should pack CCC with it.

And don't worry, we're here to help people, technology can get really frustrating and I know that!

Alright the intel driver is working A okay. No issues detected seems fresh the blocky slightly pixelated pages are also gone.

So now I'm going to reboot in safe with networking I assume? And install the High definition driver. I have to ask though. could I try installing the 13.10 mobility driver first and then give feedback on whats happening. This would save me some money on internet downloading another 200MB file?

If not I will bite the bullet and pay. your ideas? I figure since I'm not having a problem with the Intel driver now things are back on track.

I'm kinda pathetic with tech, In the past I thought I was on top of installing drivers, turns out after school I've forgotten everything haha

Ahah, technology advances a lot in few years!

Yeah, just get the driver installed in safe mode, do save the driver if you have to download it, you may need to rerun the exe.

Try the mobility first, if that doesn't work, you know the drill.

Dude you have been a great help, even if you were just here for me haha.

I got the 13.10 working again, I took the leap and it worked. seamless installation flickering restart etc. I could not install it in safe mode however it said something along the lines of could not detect driver detection driver or something like that.

It seems the problem was with the Intel HD driver which must have had a problem, and your link to MY pc's page which I could not find was invaluable so thank you. I will rather attempt the 14.4 update when I do not have an entire week off and really need my GPU. When that day comes I'm sure you will see another thread of mine haha keep an eye out.

Thanks man!

On a side note the Catalyst Control Centre Thats working now is not remotely the same as the one I had previously. So somewhere Previously I must have installed a desktop version of CCC. But now the one I'm using seems to be actually implementing the changes I make as opposed to the other one where I didnt see much change.

Also I think I noticed an increase in FPS but that could just be placebo effect.

Hey mate, it's cool! Glad it worked! Do try with the new drivers, if they work, great, if they don't, revert back to 13.3 :)

And no, it's not placebo, long driver update leaps really bring more fps to the table! That's why we upgrade them.

If you need help, whatever it is, just send a private message!

Hi sir. I have same problem with him.

After reformating my laptop. It seems that my laptop cant detect my amd driver.

I have tried downloading/installing the driver thru amd driver autodetect. After downloading the driver. The installation is only halfway finish when a pop up says that "installation packaged failure". But the installation is still finish. The problem is my amd driver on the device manager got a triangle icon with exclamation mark.

I tried googling any solutions but most of it just says to use the amd driver autodetect. And then i find this page.

Hoping for your help. Thanks 😀
