Hi Guys,

Im well aware the MB is very old and a bit outdated, but im hoping
someone can help. I am running XP.

I ran a .mov file into quicktime, it froze halfway through and ever
since, i cant play any music or videos because windows cant find my
sound device. The odd mpeg plays in WMP 10 but without sound, most
simply wont play, saying problem with device.

Ive tried removing drivers and updating them using the nvidia.co.uk
website, platform driver etc. This was the original one i used
without problems.

Ive looked in cont panel in hardware and there are 3 NVIDIA
components, both the MCP and Audio Codec Interface claim to be
working ok. However the N Force Audio one claims that it isnt
working properly

windows cant load the device driver for this hardware. The
Driver may be corrupter or missing. Code 39

I also when logging in get a msg saying nwiz.exe has encounted a
problem and thenm closes.

Does anybody have any idea as to how to rectify this without
formatting and starting from scratch.

Much Appreciated in advance. Hope somebody can help.

Duncan

Windows can/will lose drivers. I think the most common cause is due to
the Windows Registry becoming fragmented as programs are installed, a
system crash can corrupt sections of it, file associations get changed
by misbehaving apps, etc.

You could try rolling back the system to a previous configuration.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System

The System Properties window will open up. From there:

Hardware > Device Manager

Right click on the device that's not working. Then:

Properties > Roll Back Driver.

With luck, that will restore the devices to a working configuration. If
you still can't get it working properly, try booting from your Windows
CD and try the Windows Repair option.

The absolute best solution IMHO:

Partition your drive (Powerquest Partition Magic or similar program):
1 - Windows partition (approx 6 gb or whatever is appropriate for you)
2 - Data partition(s)

Format the first partition, install a fresh copy of Windows, all your
drivers, favorite programs, etc. Adjust and tweak to your liking.

Change the settings of all your apps (email, word processors, movie
players) to use the data partition for storage.

Get a copy of Powerquest Drive Image, Norton Ghost, or something
similar, and make a compressed backup image of your Windows partition.
These programs even allow you to save the backup on CD or DVD.

I've been doing this for years and it's saved me many headaches. If any
problems occur, I don't even bother trying to fix them. It takes about 7
minutes on my system to restore 6 gb of software back to the Windows
partition, then reboot and everything is back to the way it should be,
no hassles. All the data is on a separate partition, so I don't lose
anything.
