I'm having a lot of trouble with this old PC belonging to a penniless
friend. It was running like sludge on ME but has a reasonable amd1000,
40gb HDD, 256mb RAM so I decided on a format and upgrade to XP. However,
when I tried to run the XP setup, it refused to boot to CD (error code
5). I tried a newer CD ROM and got the same thing so assumed it was
something to do with the old BIOS which one of these "own brand"
affairs.

Anyway I downloaded the latest AMI bios for this board (v1.6) and did
the flash. Now, this got to the 100% mark but then said "programming
error" however on reboot the new bios was there and seeming to work OK.

It went on to boot to the CDRom OK and I got XP installed but before I
got any more software loaded I started to get random hard freezes where
I had to pull the plug. I decided to try a fresh install but have not
been able to get the installation finished before the crash happens
again.

Now, could the BIOS which gave that "programming error" be causing such
freezes? It posts OK and says the correct version number. I have tried
to install earlier BIOS versions but they just give me the message "the
flash part isn't supported. Check the part is not write protected". Is
there some way to remove write protection from the BIOS? Also does
anyone know where I can get an original "Tiny PC" bios?

The freezes continue with swapped HDD, memory modules, and CD Rom
Drives. I am at my wits end and my friend thinks I have somehow caused
the problem! Can anyone get me out of this mess??

You'd be able to get that from tiny.com

Yes, thanks Steve. It is the bios from here that gave the flash
programming error. I'm wondering if I can find the original "Tiny
Computers" BIOS.
