Hi,

I have recently put a Sapphire HD 3850 AGP in my pc but am experiencing bottle necking. My specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ @ 1.92 GHZ
650W PSU
Soundblaster Live! Digital 5.1

What processor is the minimum that would not cause bottle necking with the video card?

Thanks,
Tim

Solution
Well for that graphics card even an Athlon 64 X2 will be plenty. For a minimum i'd say Intel Pentium G540/AMD Athlon ii X2 240.Basicly any dual core thats not a Pentium D will do.

The problem with your PC is that if you upgrade to a new CPU you cant use the graphics card, so your only option is overclocking. You could reach 2.2 GHz without any additional cooling. But thats not nearly enough to fix the bottleneck issue.

Why wouldn't I be able to use it with another CPU and motherboard (with AGP)?

Hmmmm, is a bit.

I take it that Athlon 64 is not good enough.

Thanks for all your help.

I will be building a new pc soon.

Is Pentium D 2.8GHZ ok?

If not, what is the minimum Intel. I can upgrade to Core 2 Duo (or Core 2 Quad/Extreme if I really wanted to).

If you're going to upgrade you should upgrade to something that's current tech. If you upgrade to something that's 4-6 years old right now you're going to want to upgrade again in 2 years. Add all those marginal costs up and it will exceed that of a new computer all together.
