I have 4gb off ddr2, a case, and some old hardware and may want to throw together a cheap little linux box(it would have a gui). What is a good processor choice for this Amd or intel it doesnt matter. Id perfer to have at least a quad core with a low tdp of 65w or less but that is kinda picky and only seems to leave a core 2 quad

If you just have the RAM, no motherboard or CPU, you aren't going to be losing a whole lot by just scrapping the ram and getting some newer components.

A cheap modern system (faster than the others):
$131.84
Intel BX80662G4400 Pentium Processor G4400 $59.97
MSI Intel Skylake H110 $44.99
Crucial 4GB Single DDR4 $26.88

Here's some older DDR2 hardware:
$64.93
Biostar AMD Motherboard N68S+ $44.44
AMD Phenom X4 9500 $20.49

And if you're feeling adventurous:
$31.51
Genuine 571889-001 408544-005 HP Workstation xw9400 $19.99
AMD OS2352WAL4BGH OPTERON QC 2352 SOCKET F 1207 $11.52

Yea I know a new system will do much better(and is most likely worth it) just wanted some opinions because I hate stuff going to waste., also wanted to make a classicmachine but the PII is fine. wish it was mobile ddr2 as i have some latitudes that could use it.

Core 2 Duo E8500 or Core 2 Quad Q6600

But I agree with the opinion above about getting modern stuff.

If you have a local university or are near a large city, you can often find surplus machines for $50 or so. They are typically workstations and have higher end processors (for that era). Slap a decent GPU in it and you have a classic rig. There are a lot of old Dell Optiplex' looking for a good home. :)
