Processor running too hot

I have a custom build PC with:

  • Core i5-3470
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti (ASUS DirectCU II OC)
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3
    500W PSU
It was fine, but one day it hard powered off, as if the PSU was unplugged. The case was noticeably hotter than normal so I rebooted and installed OpenHardwareMonitor. The CPU seemed to be idling at 40-50 degrees Celsius and so I tried playing a game of CS:GO (CPU intense game) to see what happened. I got to round 3 when the CPU shot up to the high 80s and then the CPU cut out again.

Before these issues, the PC was fine, but now whenever I load a GPU intense game, the PC hard resets immediately. I click launch on games like Fortnite, CS:GO, Overwatch and the PC just dies.

The only issue I know of is the fact that when I tried to physically inspect the CPU, two of the socket pins are bent. Could this be it? That wouldn't explain the sudden change in performance though. No system updates were installed recently as far as I know. Could it be a PSU overload issue, I assume 500W is enough.

Thanks in advance

EDIT: I have a stock cooler and 1 80mm case fan.

Sounds like the cooler is toast. Have you been keeping up on routine maintenance such as cleaning out the dust in your system? The bent pins are problematic, but I'm not sure how they could have gotten bent inside the socket, are they still inserting into the holes, or are they severely bent?

I'd buy a cheap, reasonable aftermarket cooler and follow the guidelines for putting it on the CPU then try everything again. The stock cooler should have been enough for that CPU, so if that's getting too hot I'm thinking something isn't working right.

sorry to revive a dead post!!!

I re-bent the socket and everything looks good now. The cooler is fine, thanks for your help though
