Ok, so i am looking to go from an intel i5 processor to anintel i7 processor, but its been brought up that they may not fit. I have also looked into it and found out if the processors are from the same series (ex: 1150 i5 and 1150 i7 or something like that) then they can be put into the same socket on the motherboard. But, i don't know how that works. could they do something like 1150 and 1170 ? Thanks for the help

1150 and 1155 are the socket numbers. A motherboard and a processor must have same socket. if they are not than the processor wont fit into the motherboard. Sockets are changed time to time like 4th and 5th generation processors will have same socket ie 1150. 1155 was old socket for 3rd gen. Enthusiast cpu like i7 5820k, 5930k etc needs 2011-v3 socket. All in all both mobo and cpu must have same socket
