i cant get the product key to work on win98 SE 🙁

MS support for W98 ended a long time ago. It is certainly conceivable that the activation servers no longer support W98 as well.

Not to put too fine a point on it but MS didn't implement activation servers for the OS until XP's release. Up until then if the key passed all the internal checks one was good to go. If the product key doesn't work then it's not correct.

to do it legally, i guess you'll have to buy one from ebay.
are you sure this key is for windows 98?

If the key is from W98FE ("first edition"), it may not work on W98SE ("second edition").
