A friend gave me this laptop, wasn't working properly. I removed and reinstalled the BIOS battery. It's actually working great. I'm on line and all. The problem is that it keeps asking me to activate windows. It is activated if it's on line Right? The product key that came with it doesn't seem to work. I have discussed with Toshiba and they said I "probably" need a new one. This laptop isn't even 2 years old. Is it because I'm not the original owner? Are you just trying to make more money? (of course they arfe) lol HELP

Being "online" does not mean it is activated.
Win 8 will give you a 30 day grace period. And then increasing level of nag.

Currently, you have no idea where the OS on it came from.

And for any used system, your very first move should be a full wipe and reinstall. You have no idea what the previous owner(s) had in there.
