I have a Presario 8000T and wanted to move the drive to my Promise
controller. I first installed the controller and the drivers for it in
Windows XP. I then moved the drive from the onboard IDE to the Promise
card. The card is detected correctly in the BIOS. When booting to the
hard drive the computer crashes before anything happens. I suspect the
problem has to do with the master boot program that Compaq uses to
enable their System Recovery.

I would suspect you don't have the right drivers for it to be a BOOT drive.
That usually takes a clean install on the drive.
