Prompt for String in Batch File

Are there any utilities that I can use if a batch file that will prompt the
user to enter a string and store the value in an environment variable that
are XP compatible/

In XP you can use the SET /P variable=[promptString]

Example:

@Echo Off
Set /P UName= Username:
Set /P UPass= Password:

Echo User Name = %UName%
Echo Password = %UPass%
