If you've ever plugged in a lamp that was turned on, one of two things will happen. The light comes on as soon as you plug it in, or the bulb blows and no light. If the pc works, no harm done, it works. If it doesn't turn on, then I guess the bulb blew and you've got your answer.

A switch just cuts or enables power , exactly same as if you switched on/of somewhere else or plugged in.
