Question PSU cable doesn't fit in MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX motherboard

I am upgrading my old PC for my son for Christmas...I haven't worked with computer hardware in a while and could use some help.

I am replacing the Mother Board, CPU & RAM but keeping my existing Case, PSU, GPU, & Hard Drive. (For now)

The new mother board I picked up is: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4
All was going well and everything is hooking up nicely until I got to the CPU power supply cable. The old mother board used a 6 pin connecter (2x3) and my new mother board uses an 8 pin connector (2x4). The cable from the PSU has an extra 2 pin adapter to add on to the 6 pin so it seems like all is in order to turn my 6 pin (2x3) into an 8 pin (2x4).

The problem is that on the 2 pin adapter there is a small peg on one of the plugs that cause it to not fit. The same thing is on the 8 pin (2x4) plug that I use to plug into my GPU, but the GPU slot to receive the plug has a small cut out for the peg while my mother board does not.

Is this a problem with my PSU and I need to replace it as well, am I overlooking something obvious here, or is there a work around.

Yes it was an OEM, thanks for the advice. I kinda figured that was going to be the answer but needed to get some other buy in before I pulled the plug and upgraded that too. I really appreciate the quick responses.

Thank goodness you weren't able to connect the PSU! The best Diablotek is one that is never connected to anything or even turned on.

Been a while since I've seen one of those in the wild. I had hoped they'd all be dead by now and being tortured for an eternity in PSU Hell.
