Hi all!
So having taken the wise advice of people on here from my last post...

I've got the RAM, and the cooler. Now I just need to decide on a PSU.

I've been looking around for a couple of weeks now trying to decide and my head is full of PSU info and it's all merging into one blob so I'd appreciate a fresh set of knowledge. All I can safely say is that it'd take about 2,500 hamsters in wheels to get up to 1000W.... but my wife isn't keen on that idea 😀

I pretty much have it narrowed down to a Corsair - reading various reviews and according to the what to buy/avoid sticky at the top of this PSU forum they seem to be the way to go, especially with their 7-10yr warranties! Unless anyone can suggest a different way to go that might have slipped past me...?

I have it narrowed to a few: HX850i (£190), HX1000 (£160), HX1000i (£215) I know 1000W is probably overkill but the price difference is not that much and who knows what I may wish to upgrade in the future... plus i work in an LED factory so I strongly suspect an excess of RGB will creep in and around the place 😉
I like the idea of having the iCue software to monitor voltages etc but as I gather the HX1000 is more stable than the HX1000i as it is newer and has the ripple suppresion on the cables... i think :/

My build is as follows, and according to PCPartPicker, will be just under 500W when you include fans and other stuff like SSD's & Blu-Ray etc

MoBo: Asus X570 TUF Gaming Plus (WiFi)
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
GPU: Sapphire RX590+ Nitro
RAM: Corsair LPX Vengeance 16Gb
Cooler: DeepCool Gammaxx GT BK
O.S: Win 10 64bit
Case: CoolerMaster CM690ii Advanced

Thanks in advance! 😀

Ok, thanks for the advice. I went with the RX590 not that long ago because it was a cheap and it got me where I wanted to be graphics wise
Didn't know that you already had it and if it gives you the performance you want fine of course. Still keep the money extra spend on those HX psu's in your pocket and get something like that RMx 650watt which will be fine for about all you throw at it except the crossfire thought, but as said by more here is that nothing to look into anymore.
overkill is an understatement for that pc. 550w is more than enough for the system and 650w wold be enough for pretty much any new gpu that might come out!!

here are much cheaper options that easily will power the system

but if you insist on spending crazy money any of those 3 options you listed would be a great psu. you won't go wrong with any of them.

Yeah I get 1000W is overkill and stuff is way more energy efficient than last time I built up my PC (2009/10) but if I was to add another GPU later on down the line it'd bring me right up into the realms of an 850W with a nice bit of headroom still... according to the wattage calculator on PCPP.

Running two graphics cards on the same system is no longer worth the hassle now that much more powerful single cards are available, so it's rarely done now.

Much better to buy a more powerful card to replace what you've got when you feel the need.

what he said. unless you're going to use a second card for mining or data crunching or other such uses, it is not worth it at all to go that route. for normal use and gaming a single card is the way to go. they barely support 2 cards now and it is just not worth the headaches for pretty much no gain.

Not to be blunt, but it's kinda a weird kind of thinking, getting a RX 590 now with maybe going crossfire in the future and spending so much money on a psu.
Just get a better gpu now (and in the future when upgrading) and if you want something more on the psu get a good 650watt gold psu now.

You could get these for under 100 pounds,
(the RMx is better quality)
spend the extra minimal 90 pounds on a better gpu right now.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I went with the RX590 not that long ago because it was a cheap and it got me where I wanted to be graphics wise, plus it went with the black & blue theme I had going on, which was a nice bonus. I'm not going to be mining or anything like that, just a bit of light gaming (not chasing after every available FPS) and some photo editing/stacking.

On the PSU thing, rather like data backups, once you have a serious loss of kit or data you (hopefully) learn the lesson and don't go cheap. Fortunately I haven't lost kit to a bad PSU failure but I know someone who basically lost everything to one many moons ago and it's always stuck with me.

don't confuse quality with wattage. there are plenty of "1000w" pieces of junk out there and many high quality 550w units as well. so long as you get quality any failure won't normally hurt the system. they have protections built in to prevent any such damage
