Question PSU Failure, burning smell

My PSU died after transit from home to uni.

When I booted my PC up it started making a crackling noise, then I shut it off 2 seconds later.

I did it again and the same thing happened, then I smelt and electric burning smell. There was no fire (Thank god) but Ive not turned it on since.

1. Has this likely damaged my PC parts?

2. Does this PSU I got off a friend work with my rig?

Friend's 500w PSU: NRP-VC503 Switching Power Supply

MOBO: ASRock h97m pro4
CPU: i5 4590
GPU: 1060 6gb
RAM: 16gb
Storage: 2 SSDs

Old psu is a XFX PRO550W If your curious.

You won't know if you have done damage or not.
You can try your friends PSU, but it's not a great one, so I wouldn't use it for prolonged periods.

Its at the bottom of my post (XFX PRO550W). What makes you say not to use my friends PSU?

Because your friends PSU is poor quality , your XFX Pro , although an older model was very good , made by Seasonic.

Your right about it being low quality its making a clicking sound sometimes.

But the XFX pro being high quality? It still stinks of burnt electrics.

I said it Was , not now as it seems to have failed. It's an older model , but in it's prime was top of the line.

Everything fails, no matter what. The XFX as quite rightly said, was a top tier PSU, it's now broken and you want to put something very cheap inside, which may or may not be good for your computer.
