hi,

I am building a new gaming rig. Guys need your help on PSU selection. Please do specify how much amps on 12V rail is reqd. and what will be the expected power consumption (in watts) of this rig.

My system specs:

i5-3470 3rd gen i5 (ivy bridge)
Sapphire AMD 7850 2 GB
4 GB DDR3 RAM 1333Hz
WD 500GB HDD 7200rpm
Gigabyte H77M - D3H
Samsung 20" monitor
Samsung DVD combo

One of the options is Cooler Master Thunder 500W with two 12V rails of 21 & 24amps totaling to 408W (34amps) : http://www.flipkart.com/cooler-master-thunder-500w-500-watts-psu/p/itmdbm7fefnpygyn?pid=PSUDBM7EDH7YSFTZ&ref=8115f35e-53b5-44f2-9a6c-a5eb0044ebc1

For a system using a single reference design Radeon HD 7850 graphics card AMD specifies a minimum of a 500 Watt or greater system power supply. The power supply should also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 27 Amps or greater and have at least one 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector. Some of the non-reference design Radeon HD 7850 graphics cards require at least two 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

Total Power Supply Wattage is NOT the crucial factor in power supply selection!!! Sufficient Total Combined Continuous Power/Current Available on the +12V Rail(s) rated at 45°C - 50°C ambient temperature, is the most critical factor.

Overclocking of the CPU and/or GPU(s) will require an additional increase to the maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current ratings, recommended above, to meet the increase in power required for the overclock. The additional amount required will depend on the magnitude of the overclock being attempted.

The Cooler Master Thunder 500W (RS-500-ACAB-M3), with its maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 34 Amps and with one (6+2)-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector, is sufficient to power your system configuration with a single Radeon HD 7850 graphics card.
