Hello,

I'm planning to buy two Intel Xeon E5-2670:

http://ark.intel.com/products/64595/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2670-20M-Cache-2_60-GHz-8_00-GTs-Intel-QPI

and use them with an ASUS Z9PA-D8C motherboard:

https://www.asus.com/Commercial-Servers-Workstations/Z9PAD8C/

I will also install AMD HD6950 and 16gb of DDR3 1600 RAM for starters. I am asking what kind of power supply would I need - how strong (I guess 700W will do) and if there are some things I need to be especially careful about?

Thanks!

It will decrease the performance. Some systems won't boot without a DIMM in each slot in a bank. I can't answer for that specific board. You could get unbuffered RAM but it will still have to be ECC. With 4GB DIMMs, you only end up with 32GB. Not really that much of an overkill for dual 16 thread CPUs.

You didn't identify what purpose you were building this, so any more advice is limited.
You need a power supply with DUAL ATX12V plugs. Most don't have that. You also REALLY want 8 DIMMs and they need to be REGISTERED DIMMS (RDIMMs). Those CPUs have quad channel memory interface so you want to populate all the slots for each socket.

Thank you for a prompt reply. :) I'll keep in mind dual atx12v plugs.

But is it really necessary to put in RDIMM RAM since motherboard specifications say it supports UDIMM as well and checking some other builds and they used UDIMM RAM? Also is it necessary to populate all the slots because that much of RAM may be a bit of an overkill for my needs. Would leaving some slots open only decrease performance or would it cause the system not to work?

Thanks again.

I'm building a new DAW for recording and video editing and I have the ASUS Z9PA-D8 Motherboard with Dual Xeon E5-2667 V2 (8 cores and Turbo at 4.0). I'm not sure which PSU I should get. My older daw (same Motherboard) has the Antec High Current Gamer 750W PSU in it but I was looking at the Antec HCP-850PLATINUM to see if it would work or be overkill.

In the write p on Newegg's site it says
Antec’s HCP-850 unifies raw power with advanced PSU engineering to meet the demands of high performing PCs. A full-featured, 80 PLUS® Gold-certified unit, the HCP-850 is capable of outputting 99 percent of its rated power on four +12V rails, ensuring CPU and graphics card compatibility. Exclusive to the High Current series, HCP-850 boasts High Current heavy-gauge 16 AWG wiring that boosts conductivity, increasing efficiency and improving power delivery. In addition, a double-layer PCB, onboard DC-to-DC converters and Active Power Factor Correction (PFC) provide substantial voltage stability. To tackle the needs of your system, pick up Antec’s HCP-850.

I was also considering the Antec HCG M HCG-850M 850W.

My video card will be the ASUS GeForce GTX 1070.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
