psu smoking and leaking

So my psu started to smoke and smell so I unplugged it. Then I took it off the pc and noticed that there was some liquid on it. Now Im wondering why this happened, it was a corsair tx750m, maybe it was this surge protection extension that I bought 2 months ago but I don't really know. Now I'm currently using a 500w one and my pc is doing just fine (not using the surge protection anymore).
