PSU upgrade on a Dell 580

I just purchased a Dell Inspirion 580 with an i5-750 processor and want to upgrade the Power Supply Unit from the standard 300 watt to something that can sustain a higher end graphics card. Since this is a new computer, I do not want to damage it so I inquired with a Dell rep before messing around with it. They told me upgrading the PSU would fry the motherboard. This made my BS meter rise a bit and so wanted to see if I can put teeth to it or not.

Has anyone upgraded this model? If so, any issues?

As it should, they've been running that line of BS for as long as I can remember.
A higher wattage psu isn't going to hurt your motherboard.

^+1, bear in mind too, that you current PSU must be ATX, because usually the DELL rigs use different forms of PSU.

It is, for the most part they have been for years.
The slimlines don't use ATX, most of them use TFX, another readily available form factor.

Are there any special considerations regarding connector types, or are they standard? In past experiences upgrading machines, would you assume that since the form factor and wattage are appropriate that the pinouts would be standard, or should they be verified before installation?

No issues with connector's, they are standard.
Physical size is the biggest concern, after that is cabling, I prefer modular because it makes life a little easier.

I would go for the Antec TruePower 550W, IMO is the best options for you.

It is, but the extra $26 for the TPN gets you as much 12v output, higher efficiency, a longer warranty, sleeved cables and semi modular construction.
