Have just returned to playing recently only to find
PTW "freezing" my machine.
Any reported XP problems?
I use auto update with MS so I assume I have
the LATEST and greatest of WinXP home.
Previously I had no problems like this with PTW and XP.
I haven't changed hardware etc. only program updated
would be WinXP.
Thanks

Is it a fresh install of ptw?

A more detailed description of what happens would help.

It is not a "fresh" install. It is the original installation
from when I set this machine up with WinXP and it's current hardware.
Ergo, my belief that
there might be some problem with XP and it's
myriad updates.
I stopped playing for about 90 days, in which time
there were umpteen updates from MS.
When I say it "freezes" my machine I mean NOTHING moves
mouse stays in last position and I have to reboot to
get machine running again. All game activity ceases.
I suppose I could have a failing hard drive, a failing mouse,
or intermittent problems with RAM....BUT since this
"freezing" ONLY appears while I am playing PTW
I assume PTW is having a conflict with something?

I had the same problem. Added more memory and the problem went away. My
upgrade was from 98. I did not try to reinstall. I replaced 128MB with 512MB
and have not had an issue since. XP uses tons of resources.

Try reinstalling PTW. If you want to save your previous HOF scores and ini
settings, just backup the highscores.cv3 and ptw.ini files and replace them
AFTER you have started a new dummy game (incase they get replaced when
generated anew).

Do a directx diagnostic (or try this first). Start >> Run >> dxdiag

Make sure your video driver is up to date to be compatible with the newer
directx.

Try disabling the intro video via PlayIntro=0 in the ini file.

Try Refresh=60 or 75 or (whatever you 'know' your desktop setting is) in the
ini file.

Make sure you have the proper monitor driver installed via Device Manager
and not the 'Plug and Play' driver.

As you can see, my suggegtions point to a video problem of some sort.

Well if XP is eating up my 2gigs of memory then I'll go back to
listening to the radio....but then again it is possible I've got a
memory leak, have to work on that one.
Thanks

Did ALL as you suggested and have played a game for an hour without
mishap.
We'll see how long it lasts?
Thanks

Glad it's working.
The suggestions were meant to be done one at a time until you figured out
which it was so others could benefit from it.

Well then "others can benefit" from the fact that all that I did
does not seem to be working. I have not only gotten the problem
in PTW but I ran across it in Corel draw while working with some very
large graphic files.
A new twist is that I now get a "sputtering" sound from my speakers
when it hangs. The "conflict" may be a Roxio sound program that
has been loading but I have never used. I am disabling it every time
I start-up to see what if any change that will make.
