I have been patiently shopping Graphics Cards for months, I'm in no rush to buy. My EVGA 560 Ti has been doing fine but i would like to upgrade for better performance. I see that Newegg has a deal on XFX R9 280X:

I have no experience with AMD products or XFX. I have mostly been looking at the GTX 760's while waiting for a price drop or a great sale.

According to Tom's Best Graphics Cards for the money: July, the r9 280X should easily out perform the 760 but I am nervous about switching to AMD. I know I can get a 760 any day for less than the price of this 280x but I see it as more bang for the buck; an opportunity to get a higher tiered card for about the same price as the 760's.

Is this a good enough deal to pull the trigger on or should I continue to wait and get an Nvidia.

I have a HD 7970 and it works great. I actually came from a GTX 760. I bought this off Ebay for a cheap price. The disadvantage of the AMD GPUs vs Nvidia is that Nvidia GPU normally consume less power, and have better software/drivers. But in my opinion getting better performance in games is more important than software. (BTW a R9 280x is a rebranded HD 7970 GHZ, which is a factory OCed HD 7970, and my HD 7970 is at 1100 mhz core 1500 mhz mem)
