The company I work at deals with a lot of security type hardware. They recently decided to scrap out some old DVR's that were outdated and could not be sold. I managed to harvest the hard drives out of them and ended up with a 4TB and a 1TB WD purple drive and a Seagate 2TB drive. Sadly, I managed to drop the 4TB drive and kill it. The other 2 I reformated but have not decided yet how I will use them, but probably to back up some data. I have already ordered a docking station that connects to my PC via USB 3.0. (I have an old 2.0 USB setup which is too slow)

Question is, what exactly is the "purple" designation? They are marked as for 24 x 7 systems. They seem to operate as any other hard drive, so I assume they would be fine for storing back-up material. I already have a dedicated internal drive in my system as a back-up but it does not include data.

Thanks

They are more optimized for writing vs reading or both. 99% of what they do is just record, and then overwrite again and again. 1 small time out of 1000 writes you need to read the footage.

Sounds like it would be fine for a back-up.

By the way, took the broken 4TB drive apart (not that I really thought I could fix it...). found a bit of metal that seemed to have lodged between one of the disks and an internal shield. Oh well, at least I didn't pay for it.
