I just got my hands on a nice ASUS VG248QE, I currently have it hooked up to my Laptop with HDMI 1.4V cable. I understand that I cannot get 144hz from a HDMI but I read elsewhere that I may be able to get up to 120HZ. I was wondering if I could receive any help? I have tried setting the HZ refresh rate in the Nvidia Control Panel but can't find where to do so.

Solution
You can change your refresh rate under "Display -> Change resolution" in Nvidia control panel. If the drop down menu doesn't have 120Hz as a choice you may need to select a different resolution. Meaning, you may have 1080p selected under the "Ultra HD, HD, SD" header. Switch down the list to 1920x1080 under the "PC" header. You should now be able to enable the highest available refresh rate.

HDMI 1.4 does not support 120hz. People are often confused by what HDMI says is supported. What HDMI 1.4a and b can support is HD3D at 120hz (60hz per eye). It does this by sending both the right and left images in a single transmition, then the splitting them up to be shown in order with active 3D glasses. This doesn't work for 2D.

Hi there and thanks for your reply. I currently have my Nvidia control panel open and the only drop down option I can see is the 3D settings one, other than that there are not display or any other alternate choices. Any idea where I can activate them or get Nvidia to detect my monitor?

Thanks!

If you are trying to use 3D Vision, you can't do that through HDMI. You need to use the dual link DVI-D connection.

If you are looking to select the monitors refresh rate, if you are still using HDMI, you are simply limited to 60hz, which will be the default refresh rate anyway.

But to change the refresh rate, select the "change resolution" option, and you'll see the refresh rate selection there. You likely can select 75hz if you drop to 720p.

Hi there,

First off, thanks for the reply! But as I stated above, the only options that I have in my Nvidia control panels at the current moment are the ones to adjust my 3D Settings. There is literally no other options, and even browsing through submenus have led to no avails.

If wanted, I can provide screenshots?

You may need to reinstall your drivers, but there is an alternative way to adjust the refresh rate.

Right click the desktop and choose change resolution, or display settings. For Win 10, select advanced display settings, then advanced display adapter properties and click on the monitor tab. In Win 7, it'll show up after the advanced display settings and monitor tab.

Are you on a laptop? Are you still using HDMI? 120/144hz won't be available if so.
