Does anyone have a recomendation for a good PVR software that is free? I have an ATI TV Wonder Elite that came with Cyberlink Powercinema and it works, but is not very good. I am looking for something that has a good, easy to use interface, like Tivo. Also, I want something that has a program guide built into it. Obvious thing like record, schedule recordings, timeshifting, etc...

Does anyone know anything about using MythTV? I have no knowledge of Linux, so it seems like that wouldn't work, but maybe with some help I could get that going. Is it difficult to install and setup? I have heard that it is a good PVR package, so I would love to get that going.

I know there is Beyond TV, but I really can't spend any more money on this thing.

Thanks.

Next time get Windows Media Center Edition and you'll be set. Its a good setup and works well. Plus it got some of the enhancements that Server 2003 got and which XP Pro didn't get.

I haven't heard about a good distribution of Linux yet that has a PVR package integrated into it. My old roommate looked at one for our setup when we lived together, but it was still an alpha and wasn't very good. Don't remember the name.

I would love to get Windows MCE... But like I said, I am kinda out of money for my Media Center PC. So I am hoping there is a freeware PVR program that is better than the garbage that the tuner card came with.

Unless you wanna borrow me your Windows MCE disc and key... hehe.

But thanks for the reply.

As far as I am aware, there aren't any free PVR programs for windows besides what came with your card. There are two main linux based PVR programs that i know of, Freevo and MythTV. I can't vouch for Freevo, but I'm running MythTV at home. Its not simple to set up, but once you get it there it works pretty well. Apparently your card is supported by MythTV too. The best way to do that is to get a very simple to install linux distro like ubuntu and then install the software. I've heard that Freevo is a little simpler to set up/use (I'm going to try it soon) so that might be a better program for you.

Go check out the sites, freevo.org and mythtv.org. They both have good wiki's so that should help get you started.

Check out KnoppMyth.
It is a Linux Distro with MythTV built in.

This is a quote from their web site:
KnoppMyth is an attempt to make the installation of GNU/Linux and MythTV as trivial as possible. It includes everything needed to get your set-top box up and running in as little time as possible. KnoppMyth is based on Knoppix. It is targeted at anyone looking for a set-top box solution.

ENJOY! 😀

Don't you guys even pay attention? ATI Multimedia Center works with his card. Nearly nobody seems to know that?

OK, it's free. It works good. It has full PVR functionality. It has lower overhead than MCE2005 and works better than nearly anything free. It even has a free program guide.

The program guide is free for life. Software updates are free for life. It's just a good free program that works with most ATI cards.

In fact, I should say it's superior to all the alternatives I've seen here. I've tried at least half of them, and couldn't get the other half to work.

I have to disagree, it's a buggy unstable program. iMon Median is the best PVR I've used, MCE is decent, Nero's sucks almost as much as ATI's, GB-PVR is simple and flexible. I've been using ATI's off and on for years and it never seems to get better.

Even better, it won't work with my x800 or x1800xt since they are only vivo instead of aiw, what kinda crap is that? ATI could never get it right.
