Pxe-e61 media test failure check cable

I was was helping a friend speed his computer up by turning off certain things off from startup and services like skype and steam when suddenly it crashed after a reboot. then the message pxe-e61 media test failure check cable comes up every time I reboot. I need help as soon as possible because he has a paper that is due and I'm feeling really bad for causing this.

It is a Lenovo Y560 if that helps. The hard drive is detected in the BIOS. It's a Hitachi. I didn't get the model number because he's not very happy right now. I also can't seem to get pass the Windows logo when I pop a Windows 7 boot disc in there.

Does F8 to get to Safe Mode work?

If you're not even seeing the Windows logo, it's probably not something you did by turning off services (that happens much later in the boot process). The fact that you haven't had any luck with a disc is definitely not a good sign.
