just received this from Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136268

i'm running Windows 8.1, and My Computer shows "BD-ROM Drive (H: )" with no matter if a disc is inserted or not.

i read around on different sites saying to go buy a software to play Blu-Ray discs, but i would expect at least that it could be able to read anything i put in there. Blu-Ray movies, DVD movies, burned DVDs, CDs, and burned CDs will do nothing in this drive.

could i have just gotten a bad one?

UPDATE: i most likely received a bad one. i started an RMA with Newegg.

Solution
You can't use it for watch the movies ( blu-ray or DVD ) because the win8/8.1 does not come with any playback programs, you need some playback software for the drive. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/dvd-playback-help But you should read the CDs at least.
1) You can try update the firmware first. http://www.lg.com/us/support-product/lg-UH12NS30
2) If it does not work, then try to Microsoft "Fix it" http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/ or here is " Fix it Solution Center " http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/
3) Also try use other SATA port, the free playback software http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
Hope you can work it out.

Solution

(omg, i had to confirm my email 3 times before i could reply to this)

anyways, i do have a DVD playback software installed- Media Player Classic. but i can't even get DVD movies to be read, let alone just data DVDs, data CDs, audio CDs.

as for your suggestions...
1- i did install the firmware, didn't do anything.

2- that Fix It link returns a greyed out "Run now" button that says under "We're sorry, but your operating system is not supported by Microsoft Fix it at this time."

3- since this is my only option left, i will try a different SATA port. and i will also try out VLC.

UPDATE: tried a different SATA port. and it did not work. i actually swapped SATA ports with my DVD-Drive, and that continued to work after swapping them. and i also installed VLC to no luck as well as CyberLink PowerDVD not working either.
