So, do you guys think sites like tiger direct or newegg will send out random Q6600s and those that get G0 stepping luck out? Seems to me its not going to be so easy to get your hands on one if the vendors do not validate which CPU is which.

Any ideas how to circumvent this problem? I can only see a watchdog type thread evolving to find the hot spots.

Ha, what would work if...

1. I had one
2. I was willing to sell what i don't have.

You could also look at it this way.

1. Wait for GO launch.
2. Don't buy one.
3. .......
4. PROFIT!

Most e-tailers/ stores will just pick up a Q6600 from their storeroom and send it to you, regardless of stepping. They don't really let you chose or anything, but you can preorder a G0 at this site, Tankguys.

Processors are virtually the same price everywhere (except right before/after price cuts). Just walk some place and get one there, and you can be sure it has the right stepping.

No.

They do. Have you looked at the Specs on the currently available Q6600? If you purchase one with the G-0 stepping conversion that’s the one you should receive. If they don’t send you the processor you ordered, send it back. Tigerdirect identifies the processor you’re purchasing on their product page:

Wattage: 105W
Architecture: 65 nm
Core Stepping B3

So does Newegg on the Manufacturers Product link…

Package type: LGA775
Manufacturing technology: 65 nm:
Core Stepping: B3
CPUID String: 06F7h
TDP 105W
Thermal Spec 62.2°C
Core Voltage 1.100V-1.372V

The question is which stores don’t?

Also, according to Intel, the availability of the new processors is dependent on how fast old inventory is depleted:

“The depletion of inventory may be impacted by fluctuating supply and demand,
therefore, although customers should be prepared to receive the Post-Converted Materials on this date [July 13,2007], Intel will continue to ship and customers may continue to receive the pre-converted materials until the inventory has been depleted.”

So it would seem, not surprisingly, that retailers are expected to deplete old inventory before selling the updated processors.

Besides, each processor is clearly identified prior to adding it to your cart so they would have to differentiate the old ones from the new ones. To send out one that isn%u2019t as represented on the retailers site at the time of purchase is to send you the wrong item.

Read the Specs before purchasing...

As you showed the Newegg core stepping is B3.... is this the G-O stepping or the old stepping? If not the new, then what will be the nomenclature for the G-O stepping? Any info guys?

It's the old stepping. The CPUID on the new conversion will be 06FB.

Old stepping: B-3
Stepping after conversion: G-0

I think this is the info we all need:

Problem is, we can only see the SKU number, right, not the product code etc.... right?

I guess I'll be calling newegg tomorrow stating that I want a Q6600 w/ GO stepping with such and such product code. Now the question is, how can they know which CPU will be in the warehouse or if the guys loading the stuff up will check.

Now that I look closely at the Newegg site, I don't see any mention of any kind of stepping. Don't know how you'd know unless you call them. As I stated before somewhere else, I would think that if they were selling the G-O stepped version, they'd have that information plastered on their website in neon lights; so my guess is that they are selling the older version. I don't know if I can hold out though...$299 is pretty sweet. Don't know if it's worth the wait for slightly lower power consumption/heat output.

You’re making this much more difficult than it is. Just look at the product description at Tigerdirect or the "Manufacturer Product Page" at Newegg. It will either say B-3 or G-0. If it’s B-3, it’s the old version; if it’s G-0, then it’s the new stepping…simple, huh?

or you could look at the product description before purchasing.

Here's the link for the sSpec Number SL9UM (Old stepping): http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL9UM
Product Change Notification (B-3 to G-0):

I'm looking at the Newegg site now and unless I'm missing something, I don't see any stepping information (US version of the site). There isn't any Manufacturer's Product Page as far as I can see.

Scroll down to the tabs below the product and click on the "Manufacturer Info" tab. Then click on the "Manufacturer Product Page" link and it will take you here:

At www.overclockers.co.uk you can choose which version you want. G0 is £10 more and still on pre-order. They restocked on the b3s since they sold out a few days ago after the price drop, but G0s have not come in yet...

Anyone any idea if we're talking days or weeks here?

But if you read on the bottom of the PCN report it lists

"Date customer must be ready to receive post conversion material July 27th." Is that our magical g0 date?

Thats what I was wondering maybe July 27th is when they expect to start reciving the new processor?
Do we know what the deal is with sites (more then just Newegg) being out of stock and then like not even an hour later they have more? Sites can have new stock that quick can they? I would expect them to be out of stock for a couple of days and then get new ones in?
