Hello, i need a new CPU for my 775lga socket.
Im thinking about q6600 or e8500.
what cpu would be better?
Im using now e7500, gtx 750 ti oc, 8gb ram, 380 Watt PSU and a 240gb ssd.
What CPU will be better for gaming? i have a old mainboard, so i dont have overclock options.

Solution
I recently had a similar experience and was weighing e8600 vs. q6600. I was using a Lenovo motherboard out of a SFF business machine, and decided to play it safe with the e8600. I couldn't find any definitive information as to whether my specific motherboard was compatible with a quad core, but if I would have went with the quad had I ever found proof it worked. It is serving well as my wife's school machine.

This is just speculation, but I would say that he is upgrading this old system because these processors can be had for $15-20, while a new Skylake system would be considerably more.

q6600 all the way. the E8500 will be faster mhz wise (approx 600 mhz, but with four cores of the q6600 your allowing for a lot of extra CPU grunt overall.

The faster E8500 will help in some games getting an extra few FPS. However, I would take the Q6600 anytime over it.
Pity about OC'ing the CPU. The q6600 overclocks like a beast, and is easy to get to 3ghz, negating the speed bump the E8500 offers

The reason why is, im a student and aint getting much money, thats why i cant buy a new mainboard and a i7 or something.
i bought last week my ssd and my gtx 750 ti so ^^, ty u guys for help, i will buy then a q6600

I cant OC, Becaus i have no option in my BIOS

What do you mean?

My E6400 (older than I thought) runs cooler than the Q6600 as expected but the Q6600 temps rose more than I liked. Could be that the Q6600 was damaged since this was an attempt at moving it from a failed system. The BIOS processor thermal margin (down to 33 C) and ICH Temp of 69 C made me uncomfortable since this system had a traumatic failure 6 years ago. My cutoff without air conditioning is 82 C ambient temperature, where I consider shutting down. Your interests and experience will differ.

A Q6600 (as most processors) will throttle and shut down if need be; I know because that happened a couple years ago with one of my systems when the fan on the CPU cooler stopped working. It still works fine 24x7.

I'm sure you didn't mean 82°C ambient because you wouldn't be posting in this NG :)

Just realized I probably made a mistake and returned to correct it. I didn't mean to be cute, just wish there was one standard. The margins weren't all that alarming but there wasn't much advantage of the Q6600 anyway for a media PC which may need to be on 24 hours. My crash was probably due to a new graphics card and I would expect no issue with a 750Ti on practically any system.
I haven't checked out the throttling yet but still don't trust it. My Z170X system lists the speed in BIOS differently than either speed specified for the processor. Very preliminary since I'm busy elsewhere.

Dont worry 😉, i think, i have enough air cooler, if not, i will use then
