Q9300 high idle temps

Hey all,

Here's the specs;

ASUS P5N-T Deluxe Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300
4GB DDR2
Geforce 8800GT 512MB
160GB SATA HDD
Zalman CNPS9700 LED
Standard 450W PSU
120mm front fan and 80 mm side fan

No overclocking yet and remember, idle temperatures;

I have 2 questions, why are my temperatures so high and why are 2 of my cores significantly hotter than the other 2?

I'll be reseating the heatsink shortly to see if that makes a difference, but if that doesn't help, any other suggestions?

That does seem high. My Q6600 at 2.8GHz runs mid 40's and I thought I was running a bit high. What's your ambient room temp?

I know that the wolfdale cpus have a messed up temp reader but i didn't think the q9300 did. Check your hs, it might be tilted a little bit so 2 cores are getting better contact then other cores. Also check thermal paste and make sure its spread out evenly.
You should send it too me so i can make sure its working perfectly fine. I might oc it just a little bit

Ambient temperature 18-22C

I tried the heatsink that came with the processor and it was giving similar temperatures +5 degrees to each core, if all my temperatures were running at the core 3 and 4 temps I'd be happy, it's core 1 and 2 temps that really bother me.

I have the Q9450 and mine are like that. All cores are around 50C using that software (40C with real temp). I emailed Intel about it and they said as long as its under 71C its fine (This was for the Q9450 though).

I think those cores only use two temp sensors. One is for cores 0 & 1, the other for 1 & 2.
If I were to hazard a guess, it would be that the sensor between 0 & 1 is reading incorrectly.
Intel does have a prog that will test the sensors, but I've lost it, so hopefully someone else can pass it along.
Since you are 50c away from critical temps, dont worry too much about it.
